Introduction

Salukis come into rescue in cycles – sometimes not many and sometimes quite a lot. We have a number of people on our waiting list but are always looking for more. The goal is to find the right match for each Saluki and each family because we understand that not all dogs fit into all homes. Rescues are usually not an easy or straightforward choice. A rescue might have been found wandering, have ended up in a shelter/pound, or had an owner who is deceased/hospitalised with a terminal illness. As Salukis are relatively rare and in high demand as companions, they can find themselves in rescue because they have challenging behaviours such as separation anxiety, escaping, or house soiling. Sometimes breeders or owners have not been able, or prepared, to continue support until a new home can be found. Making time for a rescue often means making time to put the effort into patient and careful rehabilitation of challenging problems. If you have cats, young children, or a busy lifestyle, a rescue Saluki may probably not be a good choice for your home – especially if we don’t know their previous life or circumstances. Occasionally owners contact us if they feel their circumstances are such that they need to rehome their dog. These dogs are not rescues. By definition their breeders or owners are still taking responsibility for them and will not release them to a new home unless they have checked it out as being suitable. They can make wonderful companions, and a rehomed adult has the advantage of not requiring the same kind of work as a puppy. We can also assist you with this possibility if we know of any Salukis looking to be rehomed. But, rescue is where your heart is, we understand that. If you are looking for a companion now, we may also be able to suggest contacts in other Sighthound breeds who may be looking for great rescue homes.

What do I do now?

1. Email one of us (details at the bottom of the page) with some basic details including your name, phone number, location, and the best time to phone). Someone will then phone you to talk about your specific situation and what you are looking for. OR:

1. Phone one of our people (details at the bottom of the page). They will talk with you about your specific situation and what you are looking for.

2. If, after speaking with one of us, you decide you would like to proceed, we will arrange a home visit. This will usually be carried out by an experienced Saluki owner and is an informal getting-to-know-you visit. It is as much for you to ask questions as it is for us to check out your living situation for a Saluki (some are notorious escape artists or diggers).

3. The in-home visit is also a chance to discuss aspects of dogs and your situation with an experienced Saluki owner. It is also to ensure that you and the prospective Saluki are the best match for each other.

4. If after the home visit, it is decided that you can offer what one of our Salukis is looking for, we will then make a time to discuss with you any Salukis currently in our care.

5. If we have a Saluki that we think would be a good match, we will arrange a meeting for you and the Saluki. If you have other dogs, it can be discussed whether you wait for a second meeting, or the dog can accompany you on this visit to a neutral territory. It usually takes the pressure off if meeting dogs is done at a second meeting.

6. You will then be able to have a chat with the Saluki’s foster carer to ask questions and learn as much as possible of what is known about this prospective Saluki. If all parties are happy, then arrangements can begin to plan for further meetings (with other dogs if you have them) or when the Saluki should go to your home.

7. At this point, we ask for a donation to enable us to continue our work. NOTE: if at any stage in the future it becomes necessary to part with the Saluki, it is required that we must be consulted.
